The median Pickens County home was built in 1979, so many garage doors here are 40 years old or close to it. On a door that age we check the panels before quoting springs, because cracked or rotted sections can make replacement the better spend. Gordo is about 23 miles out on US 82.
Pickens County
Doors from the 1960s and 1970s, and when to stop repairing them
Over a third of the homes in Pickens County went up in the 1960s and 1970s. Garage doors from that era were often wood or thin uninsulated steel, and after decades of humid summers the bottom section is usually the first to go: soft wood, rusted steel or a split seal that lets water and leaves in. A spring or roller repair keeps a door like that running, but when the panels themselves are failing we will tell you so and show you what a full door replacement involves.
When a door is still sound, repair is the better value. Fresh springs, rollers and a new bottom seal can give an older steel door years more service. We look at the whole door on the first visit so you can make that choice with the facts in front of you.

Carrollton in the middle, the state line on the west
Pickens County runs from the Tuscaloosa County line west to Mississippi, with Carrollton, the county seat, near its center. Gordo sits on US 82 about 23 miles northwest of Tuscaloosa, and State Route 86 carries west from Gordo to Carrollton. Aliceville, the county's largest city, is about thirty-six miles west of Tuscaloosa. On April 8, 1998 an F3 tornado tracked about 17 miles from Holman in Pickens County to north of Northport. Countywide, 75.8 percent of homes are owner-occupied, so most decisions about repair or replacement rest with the people who live there.

Common questions
Questions from Pickens County homeowners
If the panels are solid and only the springs or rollers are worn, repair. If sections are rotted, cracked or rusted through, replacement usually makes more sense. We show you either way.
Yes. We cover the whole county, including Aliceville, Pickensville, Carrollton and Gordo. Mention the nearest town and road when you call.
Often, if the maker still produces that panel. Older or discontinued doors may not match, and then a new door is the cleaner fix.
Insulated steel with a good bottom seal resists swelling and rot better than wood. Our humidity and rust guide covers upkeep.
