Bibb County's median home was built in 1990, and about 39 percent went up in the 1990s and 2000s, so many original openers here are well past 15 years old and failing on gears, logic boards or sensors. We repair them or fit a new one. US 82 runs 32 miles from Brent to Tuscaloosa.
Bibb County
Openers from the 1990s and 2000s reaching their end
A large share of Bibb County homes went up between 1990 and 2009, and many still run the opener that came with the house. Those units fail in a few predictable ways: a stripped plastic drive gear that lets the motor hum while the door sits still, a logic board fried by a lightning surge, or photo-eye sensors knocked out of line. A gear kit or new sensors can save a unit in good shape. When the board is gone on a 20-year-old opener, a new one usually costs less over time than chasing parts.
We also check the door itself, because a door that has lost spring balance makes any opener strain. If the door feels heavy when you lift it by hand, the opener repair should start with the springs.

Brent, Centreville and a long storm record
Centreville is the Bibb County seat and Brent its largest city, and West Blocton is also in the county, while Vance and Woodstock cross the line from Tuscaloosa County. US 82 passes through northern Brent and runs 32 miles northwest to Tuscaloosa. Brent was nearly destroyed by an F4 tornado on May 27, 1973, and on March 25, 2021 an EF3 hit Brent again, damaged Centreville and wrecked the Bibb County Airport. With 79.2 percent of homes owner-occupied, most of our calls here come from the homeowners themselves.
If your power line runs through the woods, a battery-backup opener is worth a look. Our guide on opening a garage door in a power outage covers the manual release in the meantime.

On many models, yes. If the opener is near 20 years old or the part is discontinued, a new opener is often the smarter fix.
For many families, yes. A keypad lets kids or a neighbor get in without a remote. We install and program it along with your existing opener.
