Straight answer

In Alberta, garage door work splits between replacing doors on older entry-level homes and repairing doors on houses rebuilt after the 2011 tornado. If your door is dented, rusted at the bottom or rubbing the frame, we look at whether the opening, tracks and springs are worth keeping, then give you repair and replacement options.

A 1912 community rebuilt one block at a time

Alberta began as Alberta City in 1912 and joined Tuscaloosa in 1948. After the 2011 tornado left many lots cleared flat, rebuilding came one block at a time, and newer infill homes and townhomes now sit beside houses that predate the storm. That gives the area a wide spread of door sizes and ages on the same street, from original openings on older houses to builder doors on new ones.

For an older entry-level house, a plain non-insulated steel door is often the sensible replacement: it is light, it does not rot, and it takes standard springs. Where a house sits close to University Boulevard traffic, an insulated door also quiets the garage. Our pages on steel garage doors and garage door replacement cover the choices. On infill homes and townhomes built since the rebuild, the work is usually springs, rollers and openers reaching the age when they need attention.

Alberta facts

Founded 1912, annexed 1948, hit hardest in 2011

Alberta City was founded in 1912 and annexed into Tuscaloosa in 1948. It lies east of McFarland Boulevard, south of the Black Warrior River and north of Veterans Memorial Parkway, with University Boulevard running through it. On April 27, 2011 the EF-4 tornado, with estimated peak winds of 190 mph, crossed the Alberta City community, and up to 60 percent of Alberta was destroyed. Many lots were left flat after demolition, and residential rebuilding has been steady since. ZIP 35404 is 43.54 percent owner-occupied, so replacement doors here go on owner homes and rentals alike.
