Replacing dented and cracked garage door sections in Tuscaloosa
One section dented, cracked or punched in? You may not need a whole new door. We identify the door's maker and model, order a section in the same style, and swap just the damaged one so the rest of the door keeps working.

Updated October 2026
A sectional garage door in Tuscaloosa is usually four or five horizontal sections, and one damaged section can often be replaced on its own. The deciding questions are whether the maker still sells that section in your size, style and color, and whether the damage stops at one section. If several are bent, a new door often makes more sense.
Panel replacement
When one section can be replaced instead of the whole door
Each section of a sectional door is its own piece, joined to the next by hinges and carrying its own rollers, which is what makes a single-section swap possible. The new section has to match the old ones in height, width, thickness, panel pattern, color and the hinge and strut layout, or the door will look patched and may not seal or run true.
Most makers put a label on the inside of a section with the model and build date, and we use it to order the right part. If the design has been discontinued, we say so plainly and walk you through a new door instead.

Your options
Replace a section, or replace the door?
| Replace one section | Replace the whole door | |
|---|---|---|
| Best when | Damage stays in one section and the door is sound | Two or more sections damaged, or the door is worn out |
| Match | Needs the same model still made in your size | No need to find an exact match |
| Springs | Usually kept, if they suit the door weight | Resized to the new door |
| Typical cost | $300 to $900 per panel (HomeGuide) | Priced as a new door |
Panel range from HomeGuide's panel replacement cost guide. Color can differ slightly between a new section and an older faded door.

Cost
What one new garage door section costs
Published ranges for a single installed section.
| Job | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| One panel installed, sectional door | $300 to $900 | HomeGuide |
| Panel replacement with labor, Angi | $250 to $1,000 | Angi |
Planning ranges from the publishers listed, not our quotes. We price your door once we know the section can be matched.
What moves the price
- Door style. Plain raised-panel steel sections cost less than carriage-style or wood-look sections.
- Insulation. Insulated sections are thicker and heavier than single-skin steel.
- Windows. A section with glass inserts costs more than a solid one.
- Which section. Top and bottom sections carry extra hardware, the opener bracket or the seal retainer.
- Paint. A new section on an older door may need painting to match a faded finish.
On the job
What a section swap includes
- Identifying the door maker, model and section size
- Clamping the door and unloading spring tension
- Removing the damaged section and its hardware
- Fitting the new section with hinges, rollers and struts
- Moving the bottom seal or opener bracket if needed
- Re-tensioning the springs and balancing the door
- Testing travel, seal contact and the opener's auto-reverse
Section jobs we handle
Dented Bottom Panel
The bottom section takes most of the hits, from bumpers, mowers and bikes leaning against it. A shallow dent that has not creased the steel can sometimes be left alone. A dent that bends the section inward, cracks the skin or pulls the bottom seal retainer out of line is worth replacing, because the seal stops meeting the floor and water and insects get in. The bottom section also carries the cable brackets, which we check for rust while it is off.

Cracked or Split Section
Sections crack along the panel lines or at the hinges, usually where the opener arm pulls on the top section or where an impact flexed the door. A crack at a hinge is more serious than one in the middle of a panel, because the hinge can tear out and let the door fold. If the top section is cracked from opener strain, we add or replace the strut so the new section does not crack the same way.
Window Section Replacement
Windows usually sit in the top section, and a cracked or fogged insert does not always mean a new section. Many window frames are clipped or screwed in and can be replaced on their own. When the section around the window is bent or the frame style is no longer made, the whole top section is swapped. We match the glass layout to the rest of the door so the line of windows stays even.
Matching an Older Door
This is where panel replacement succeeds or fails. Makers change patterns, embossing and colors over the years, and a door from the 1990s may have no current match. We read the label, measure the section height and thickness, and compare panel profiles before ordering. When an exact match is not made any more, we tell you before any money is spent, and a close match is your call, not ours.
Step by step
How a damaged section gets swapped out
Identify the door
We read the maker's label, measure the section and photograph the panel pattern to confirm a match exists.
Order the section
The section is ordered in your size, style and color, with any windows or struts the old one had.
Swap the section
With the door clamped and springs unloaded, the damaged section comes out and the new one goes in.
Balance and test
Springs are re-tensioned, the door balanced by hand, and the opener reset and tested.
Hail and house age
Hail dents in Tuscaloosa and older doors in Northport
Hail reports near Tuscaloosa peak in March, and the most recent was quarter-size stone on July 21, 2022, enough to pock a thin steel skin. Across the river, 33.1 percent of Northport's 13,085 housing units were built before 1980 and 38.2 percent in 2000 or later, so the same street can hold a door with current sections in stock and one whose pattern went out of production long ago. That is why we confirm a match before quoting a single-panel repair.

Common questions
Panel replacement questions
Look for a label on the inside face or end edge of a section. It usually lists the maker, model and build date.
Usually close, but sun fades older doors. We tell you in advance, and painting the door evens it out if needed.
Shallow dents sometimes improve, but creased steel rarely goes back flat. A crease near a hinge or seal retainer is better replaced.
Not normally. If the new section weighs about the same, the springs are re-tensioned. A heavier insulated section may change that.
Two or more, or one plus worn springs and rollers. Our guide on whether to repair or replace walks through the numbers.
Sometimes, but wood sections are often built to order. We check with the maker first, and our stain-grade wood doors page covers the options.
It can be. The opener arm pulls on the top section, and a crack at the bracket can tear out. Leave the opener off until it is checked.
Usually not. If the damaged section is sound enough to run, the door keeps working until the new one arrives.
