Wind-rated doors and storm bracing for Tuscaloosa garages

Seen a neighbor's garage door blown in during a storm? The garage door is usually the weakest wall of a house in high wind. We add bracing to a sound door, or fit a door built and tested to a design wind pressure.

Straight answer

A wind-rated garage door in Tuscaloosa is optional, not a code requirement: it carries heavier struts, hinges and track so a 16-foot double door resists bowing. Bracing your existing door is the lower-cost route. Both suit storm-exposed homes, because keeping the garage door intact helps keep wind out of the house.

Wind resistance

Why the garage door is the first thing wind tests

A double garage door is about 16 feet of thin steel held only at its edges. When gusts hit the face, the middle bows inward, rollers pull out of the track, and in a strong enough storm the whole door folds into the garage. Once that opening is gone, wind pushes into the house and lifts on the roof from inside.

A wind-rated door is built to resist a stated design pressure, using heavier steel, more struts, reinforced hinges, deeper track and stronger mounting to the jambs. Bracing works on the same idea for an existing door, adding stiffness across its width. Neither makes a door storm-proof, but both raise the point at which it gives. What moves the price

  • Door width. A double door carries far more wind load than a single and needs more bracing.
  • Bracing type. Permanent struts cost less than removable posts that bolt to the floor and header.
  • Rated pressure. Doors built to higher design pressures use heavier steel and hardware.
  • Windows. Glass in a rated door needs impact-rated glazing, which adds cost.
  • Jamb condition. Soft or thin jambs have to be reinforced before a rated door can be anchored.

Install checklist

What goes into a storm-ready door

  • Checking the jambs and header the door anchors to
  • Fitting struts across each section
  • Upgrading hinges at the end stiles
  • Securing track brackets to framing, not just trim
  • Resizing springs for the added weight
  • Testing balance and opener force afterward
  • Showing you how removable posts go in and come out

Two routes to a stronger door

Bracing an Existing Door

If your door is in good shape, bracing is the lower-cost route. Permanent bracing adds horizontal struts across each section and heavier hinges at the end stiles, so the door resists bowing and still opens normally. Removable bracing uses vertical posts that pin to the floor and header behind the closed door when a storm is forecast, and come out afterward so the car can get out. Bracing adds weight, so we rebalance the springs, and we check that the track brackets are fastened into framing, not just trim boards.

Wind-Rated Door Packages

A rated door is designed and tested as a whole: sections, struts, hinges, track and the fasteners that hold it to the jambs. The maker lists a design pressure on a label inside the door, and the door only reaches that rating when it is installed to the maker's instructions. That makes the anchoring as important as the door. We check the jambs and header before ordering, and if the wood is soft or thin, it is reinforced first. Clopay, Amarr and Wayne Dalton all build wind-rated lines.

How it runs

From assessment to a stronger door

  1. Look at the door and jambs

We check section condition, existing struts, track mounting and the wood the door anchors to.

  2. Choose the route

You hear whether bracing suits your door or a rated door makes more sense, with both ranges.

  3. Fit and anchor

Struts, hinges or the new door go in, with brackets fastened into framing.

  4. Rebalance and show you

Springs are adjusted for the new weight, and removable posts are demonstrated if fitted.

Storm history

Tornado and tropical wind across Tuscaloosa

Tuscaloosa is far from the coast, but strong wind still reaches it. The April 27, 2011 tornado was rated EF-4 with peak winds estimated at 190 mph, and its track crossed Forest Lake, Alberta City and Holt. No door survives a direct hit at that strength, but homes along the edges of a path face far lower winds that a braced door can resist. Tropical remnants arrive too: Hurricane Ivan in 2004 produced a 55 mph peak gust at Tuscaloosa Regional Airport, enough to work an unbraced double door loose in its track.

Timing

How long bracing or a rated door takes

Bracing an existing door is usually a single visit, since struts and hinges are standard parts and the work happens on the door where it hangs. Removable post systems take a little longer because the floor and header anchors have to be set accurately.

A wind-rated door is ordered to your opening, so most of the wait is the maker building it. The install itself is a normal door replacement, plus extra time for reinforcing jambs where needed. Plan it well before spring storm season rather than after a warning is issued.
