Garage door cable replacement for Tuscaloosa homes

A cable hanging loose, or the door sitting lower on one side? The lift cables carry the door's weight from the springs. We replace both cables as a pair, check the drums and bottom brackets they connect to, and rebalance the door.

Straight answer

Garage door cable replacement in Tuscaloosa means fitting two new lift cables, one per side, running from the bottom brackets up to the drums on the torsion shaft. They are replaced in pairs because both carry the same load and age together. A frayed or slack cable can let one side drop, so stop running the door.

Cable trouble

How a worn or failed lift cable shows up

Broken strands near the bottom

Small wires splay out of the cable just above the bottom bracket, where moisture sits longest.

Cable slack on one side

One cable hangs loose while the other is tight, often after the door hit something on the way down.

Door lower on one side

The bottom edge is no longer level with the floor, so one cable has slipped or stretched.

Cable off the drum

At the top corner, the cable has jumped its groove and is wrapped beside the drum or tangled on the shaft.

Rust on the bottom bracket

The bracket at the lower corner is flaking or swollen, and the cable loop is rusted where it hooks on.

Lift cables

Why the thin cables at each side carry the whole door

On a torsion door, each lift cable runs from a bracket at the bottom corner of the door, up the side, and wraps onto a grooved drum at the end of the spring shaft. As the springs unwind, the drums turn and wind the cables in, lifting the door. If one cable frays, slips or snaps, that side loses its lift and the door hangs crooked.

Cables usually fail at the bottom, where water off wet tires collects, or at the drum, where a slack cable can jump its groove. We replace both cables together and look hard at the drums and bottom brackets, since a cracked drum or a rotten bracket will ruin a new cable. A cable that let go because a spring broke means the spring replacement comes first.

Cable job

How a pair of lift cables gets replaced

  1. Clamp and unload

The door is clamped in the track and the spring tension is unwound before any cable is touched.

  2. Strip the old cables

Both cables come off the drums and bottom brackets, and the brackets are checked for rust and cracks.

  3. Fit and wind

New cables are hooked to the brackets and wound onto the drums with equal tension on both sides.

  4. Rewind and level

Springs are rewound to the correct turns, and the door is checked level, balanced and opener-tested.

Three cable jobs

Frayed Lift Cable

Fraying starts as a few broken strands, usually in the last foot above the bottom bracket, and spreads with every cycle. A frayed cable still lifts the door for a while, which is why it gets ignored, but it fails without warning and drops that side. We replace both cables when one is frayed, since they run the same cycles. Galvanized cable sized to the door's weight is the standard replacement.

Cable Off the Drum

A cable comes off its drum when it goes slack, usually because the door met an obstruction while closing, the opener kept pushing, or a spring broke. With tension gone, the cable unwinds and drops out of the groove. Simply rewinding it rarely holds: the cause has to be found and the drum checked for cracks. If the cable kinked as it came off, it is replaced rather than rehung.

Rusted Bottom Bracket

The bottom bracket anchors the cable to the lowest section and sits right where rainwater and wet tires leave moisture. When it rusts through, the cable can pull the bracket off the door, one of the more dangerous failures because the bracket is under full spring tension. We replace a rusted bracket with the cables, only after unloading the springs, and never loosen one with tension on it. The new bracket gets fresh bolts into sound steel.

Wet and humid

Why Tuscaloosa cables rust from the bottom up

Tuscaloosa averages 53.52 inches of rain a year over 117.7 precipitation days, with February the wettest month at 5.37 inches. Wet cars drip onto the slab, and the bottom of the door sits in that damp air. The muggy season then runs from about May 25 to September 22, with July averaging 17.3 muggy days, so steel cable and bottom brackets rarely dry out fully. That is why most of the frayed cables we replace in Tuscaloosa have failed within a foot of the bottom bracket.

What moves the price

  • Drums and brackets. A cracked drum or rusted bottom bracket adds parts.
  • What caused it. A broken spring behind the cable failure adds a spring replacement.
  • Door height. Taller doors need longer cables and sometimes larger drums.
  • Track damage. A door that dropped on one side may have bent the track or a hinge.
  • Door weight. Heavier doors use thicker cable.

Hands off

What you can safely check, and what can hurt you

Fine to do yourself

  • Unplug the opener and keep the door closed.
  • Look at the bottom corners for frayed strands or a rusted bracket.
  • Check whether the door bottom sits level with the floor.

Leave these to a technician

  • Loosening a bottom bracket, which is under full spring tension.
  • Rewinding a cable onto a drum with the springs still loaded.
  • Cutting or pulling a loose cable that may still carry tension.
