Spring and opener repair for Holt garage doors

Spring gone, or an opener that hums and does nothing? Holt, east of Tuscaloosa on the Black Warrior River, began as a 1903 foundry town and was on the 2011 tornado's path, and we repair springs and openers on its older and rebuilt homes alike.

Straight answer

Holt garage calls are mostly springs and openers. If the door will not lift, look for a gap in the spring above it before you press the button again, and if you see one, leave the door closed. We replace springs in pairs, test the opener and balance the door so it holds still halfway up.

Holt homes

A foundry town on the river, now a quiet east side community

Holt grew around the Central Iron and Coal works, which lit its first furnaces in 1903 and built homes for workers along with a school and a commissary. The plant poured cast-iron pipe until the early 1980s, when plastic pipe took over. If your Holt garage was added onto an older house or built as a detached shed, measure before you shop for a door, because added-on openings are often non-standard sizes and need a door built to fit.

Damp is the other theme. Holt sits beside the Black Warrior River, and moisture works on springs, cables and bottom brackets in an unheated garage. A rusted spring breaks sooner, and rust on the bottom bracket can weaken the cable anchor. We look for both on every spring job. If the opener is what failed, our opener repair page covers the usual causes and fixes.

Holt facts

Named for a 1901 land buyer, built around a 1903 foundry

Holt carries the name of Frank Holt, who bought about 1,200 acres along the Black Warrior River in 1901. Central Iron and Coal lit its furnaces there on August 3, 1903, built worker homes, a school and a commissary, and made cast-iron water and sewer pipe until the early 1980s. Holt Lock and Dam, completed in 1969, is named for the community. The 2020 census counted 3,413 residents and 1,554 housing units, 16.7 percent of them vacant, and the April 2011 EF-4 tornado crossed Holt on its path east. In ZIP 35404, 43.54 percent of homes are owner-occupied.
