Spring and cable repair for Moundville garage doors

Cable hanging loose or a gap in the spring above the door? Those are the two failures we fix most in Moundville, a growing river town 16 miles south of Tuscaloosa on SR 69.

Straight answer

If your Moundville door has a loose cable or a visible gap in the spring, stop using it and keep the car out of the way. Damp air near the river rusts cables at the bottom brackets, and a cable that snaps under load can drop the door. We replace the cables and springs as a set and rebalance the door.

Moundville garages

River-town damp and the cables it wears out

Moundville sits on the south side of the Black Warrior River, and in a long, humid summer that moisture finds bare steel. On garage doors, it shows up first at the bottom brackets, where the lift cable wraps a pin a few inches off the slab. Water splashes up there, the cable rusts from the inside out and the strands start to break one by one. By the time it fails, the spring on that side has usually been working harder for months. A frayed cable repair with galvanized cable and new bottom brackets fixes the root of it.

The town has also been growing, with new houses added through the 2010s, so we see both ends: original springs on older homes and builder springs on newer ones. If rust is a pattern at your place, our guide to rust and humidity covers what to watch for between visits.

Moundville facts

A growing town beside the Black Warrior River

Moundville grew from 2,427 residents in 2010 to 3,024 in 2020, and its housing units rose from 1,003 to 1,283 over the same decade. Incorporated in 1908, it straddles Hale and Tuscaloosa counties on the south side of the Black Warrior River, and SR 69 leads 16 miles north to Tuscaloosa. The town is also home to a 320-acre park with 26 Mississippian-era mounds, a National Historic Landmark. Weather reaches here too: the March 17, 2021 storm that dropped an EF-1 near Brookwood produced another tornado near Moundville.
